Flyer given out on July 14, 2006Attack against Israel
On Wednesday, Israel was attacked from Lebanon by Hezbollah, a terrorist organization member of the Lebanese government . Hezbollah targeted two jeeps patrolling along the border, killing 3 soldiers, kidnapping two and wounding many others. Four Israeli soldiers were also killed when their tank exploded on a very powerful bomb.
Hezbollah also massively bombarded Israeli towns with rockets and mortar. Six Israeli civilians were wounded, one of them seriously and 5 soldiers were also wounded. Israel pursued the kidnappers in Lebanese territory.
Israel considers Lebanon responsible for this unprovoked attack. Israel has no choice but to defend its citizens. http://paris.mfa.gov.il
A simple fly, you say?
By Marc Nadeau, University of Sherbrooke professor
La Tribune (Sherbrooke), Opinions, Thursday July 6, 2006, p. 12.I was stupefied to read Mrs. Rollande Thibodeau's comment in La Tribune of July 1st concerning the Israeli military intervention in the Gaza strip. ( ) Mrs. Thibodeau should understand some notions before blaming the Israelis and crying over the situation in the other side.
First, I'm dumbfounded that she can compare Hamas to a fly that Israel is trying to neutralize with tanks. Hamas is an organization founded and financed on the principle of the destruction of Israel and that presides over the destiny of the Palestinian Authority's government. If Hamas is a fly, that fly carries a pretty nasty virus that directly threatens the survival of a country.
Israel is confronted by a government led by a terrorist organization that is threatening the foundation of its independence and integrity. This has therefore nothing to do with a simple political conflict to which Jerusalem is unreasonably responding to with arms. Simply put, Israel is fighting for its survival and for the security of its citizens. That country is also the only democracy in the Middle East and is acting as such. One should never forget this.
When one visits Israel, a very rewarding experience I was fortunate to have recently, one notices how security is at the forefront of that nation's life. The tiny Hebrew State must deal with several openly hostile neighbors and with many terrorist groups who will not back down before achieving their goal of erasing Israel off the map. A simple fly, you say?
Faced with this situation, the government of Jerusalem must allocate an important part of its resources &endash; 40% of its budget &endash; and of its efforts to security. And Israeli civilians, whom Mrs. Thibodeau curiously doesn't bring up in her complaint, often pay for the horrors of the blind and bloody terrorism that their country is subjected to. What about the moral sense of those who kill innocent Israeli victims? Unfortunately, the author of the comment is silent on the subject
Before depicting Israelis as the torturers of an oppressed people, I would strongly suggest to this dear lady, and to those who think like her, to inform themselves and, more importantly, to detach themselves from the strong feelings brought up by a powerful anti-Israel propaganda. In the Middle East just like elsewhere, peace depends on security. Like all countries of the world, Israel has the right and the duty to defend its existence. This is not at all incompatible with the flourishing of the Palestinians, in as much as their leaders respect the integrity of the Land of the Jewish People.
